Which deities reside in the lamp (Deepa)?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

The explanation is as follows:

In the lamp vessel (paatrey), there is the presence of Brahma (Chaturmukha Brahma).

In the oil or ghee, there is the special presence of Lakshmi.

In the wick (batti), there is the presence of the Lord in the forms of Vasudeva and Sankarshana.

When the lamp is lit, we see different colors in the flame:

White (light) – presence of Vayu

Black (dark part of flame) – presence of Rudra

Red (glow) – presence of Indra

Inner Contemplation (Anusandhana)

While lighting the lamp, one should meditate like this:

Indra – controller of the mind (Mano-niyamaka)

Rudra – giver of detachment (Vairagya)

Vayu – giver of knowledge (Jnana)

Sankarshana – remover of ignorance

Vasudeva (Paramatma) – giver of liberation (Moksha)

Conclusion

👉 The lamp is not just light — it is divine presence
👉 Each part of the lamp represents different deities
👉 While lighting, we should do anusandhana (divine contemplation)
