Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
The scriptures give the following answer:
“Parānnaṁ yo hi bhuñjīta daśamyāṁ dvādaśī dine
Ekādaśī vratasyāsya daśamyāṁ turyabhāgataḥ
Dvādaśyām ardha-bhāgaśca dātāram adhigacchati.”
This means:
If a person eats food prepared in another person’s house (parānna) on Dashami or Dwadashi,
Then the punya (merit) of the Ekadashi vrata is reduced.
Specifically:
On Dashami, one-fourth of the merit goes to the person who gave the food.
On Dwadashi, half of the merit goes to the person who gave the food.
Ekadashi vrata is observed with discipline and purity.
Food prepared at one’s own home is considered more sattvic and personally sanctified.
Eating outside (in another’s house) may reduce the spiritual benefit of the vrata.
It is best to cook and eat at home on Dashami and Dwadashi.
Avoid eating at others’ houses just for convenience.
Otherwise, the punya you earned may partially transfer to the host.
