How do our good and bad deeds stay connected with our soul? Is there any evidence or reference in shastra?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

People often ask: “After doing punya (good deeds) or papa (sins), how do these affect us? How do they come to us?”

The scriptures explain it like this:

Dhana (wealth), bhoomi (land), animals, cows, wives, houses, sons, cremation grounds, and even the body itself — all these are affected by the results of our deeds.

After death, our soul takes the path to the next world depending on our karma.

Good deeds (punya) remain with us and benefit us, while sins (papa) must be removed or mitigated.

Specifically:

Wealth, land, and possessions remain where we are, and we enjoy them here.

Animals and property follow their own natural courses according to the owner’s karma.

Wives remain with their families according to their own destiny.

Sons may go to cremation grounds when their time comes.

Our body, after death, becomes ashes and merges into the elements.

Therefore, in circumstances where our body and soul move to the next world, it is only the punya we accumulated with us that accompanies us. The sins should be removed or mitigated.

In worldly life, we may enjoy wealth and possessions temporarily, but only the punya accumulated through proper effort, devotion, and ethical living truly benefits us in this world and the next. Sins, if not removed, will lead to suffering.

In short:

Do good deeds sincerely and with effort.

Avoid or rectify sins.

Wealth and worldly gains are temporary; punya is eternal and supports us in this life and beyond.
