Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Food / Eating
In matters of food, some items may suit the husband, and some may suit the wife. Usually, the husband consumes the items that suit him, and the wife consumes the items that suit her.
However, the Shastras give guidance regarding this matter. In the Mahabharata, in the Vana Parva, a statement appears:
“Yaccha bhartā pibati, yaccha bhartā na sevate,
yaccha nāśnāti me bhartā, sarvaṁ tad varjayāmyaham.”
The meaning of this is that a wife should accept what her husband accepts, and she should avoid what her husband does not accept.
In other words, the traditional idea is that if something suits the husband, the wife may also accept it; if it does not suit the husband, she should give it up, thinking that “what does not suit my husband should not be suitable for me either.”
Therefore, if the husband does not consume a particular item, but the wife still chooses to consume it simply because she personally likes it, this is not considered the ideal conduct according to traditional cultural values.
