Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Food / Eating
The summer season has arrived, and everyone feels thirsty and drinks water. In the hurry to quench their thirst, many people drink water in whatever way they can. I have seen many people go near a tap, cup their hands, and drink water directly from their palms.
However, what do the Shastras say about this? Is it proper to drink water in this way? The Shastras state:
“Na kuryāt vr̥thā ceṣṭām, nā vāryañjalinā pibet.”
This means that drinking water directly from the palms (cupped hands) is prohibited according to the Shastras.
Therefore, one should not drink water in this manner. Instead, one should make an effort to take water in a vessel and then drink it. Only when water is consumed in this proper way do the presiding deities associated with water accept it and help relieve our thirst.
Hence, one should avoid drinking water from the palms and try to drink it using a proper vessel.
