Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Food / Eating
A question is asked: What happens if a person eats food without performing Vaishvadeva?
In Parashara Smriti it is explained as follows:
“Akṛtvā vaiśvadevaṁ tu yo’nnaṁ bhuṅkte dvijādhamah
sa bhuṅkte hi krimīn sarvān kākayoniṣu jāyate.”
This means that a Brahmin who eats food without performing Vaishvadeva is considered inferior, and it is said that he is as if eating all kinds of worms along with the food. Moreover, such a person may be born in lower births such as that of a crow and similar forms.
Therefore, one should first perform the worship of the Lord, then perform Vaishvadeva, and only after offering the food in Vaishvadeva should a Brahmin partake of that food. This is considered the proper practice according to the tradition.
