Sthala Purana
Simhachalam is revered as the abode of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, where the Lord manifested in a combined form of Varaha (boar) and Narasimha (man‑lion) to save devotees. The deity is covered in sandal paste throughout the year, giving the idol a smooth appearance. Only once annually, on Akshaya Tritiya, the sandal paste is removed, and devotees witness the original fierce form of Narasimha. The temple is mentioned in the Skanda Purana and has been patronized by dynasties like the Cholas, Eastern Ganga kings, and Vijayanagara rulers.
