Thothadri (Vanamamalai/Nanguneri) Temple in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu is one of the eight Swayam Vyakta Vishnu Kshetras, revered as a Divya Desam. It is famous for its unique sacred oil abhishekam ritual, deep Vaishnava heritage, and association with Sri Varamangai Thayar.
Sthala Purana (Legend)
Sage Bhrigu performed penance here, leading Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi to descend and bless him. Their divine marriage took place at this site.
The temple is linked to the cosmic battle of Vishnu against Madhu and Kaitabha, where their blood polluted the earth, and Vishnu restored balance.
Goddess Lakshmi grew up here as Varamangai, later marrying the Lord, giving the temple its name.
