Madhwa

Without Shikaa or Chandike, can one perform any karma (ritual)?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

Answer from Shastra

A text called Smrityartha Sagara explains:

๐Ÿ‘‰ A Brahmana should always:

  • Wear the Yajnopavita (sacred thread)
  • Keep the Shikha properly tied

Important Meaning

  • If a person performs rituals without Yajnopavita and Shikha,
๐Ÿ‘‰ those actions become fruitless (no result)
  • To tie the knot (Chandike),
    ๐Ÿ‘‰ Shikha must be present

Practical Understanding

๐Ÿ‘‰ One should at least maintain a proper Shikha
๐Ÿ‘‰ It should be sufficient to tie (knot)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Without it, rituals lose their value

Conclusion

๐Ÿ‘‰ Always wear Yajnopavita
๐Ÿ‘‰ Always keep Shikha tied properly
๐Ÿ‘‰ Otherwise, rituals may become ineffective
