Is there any shastric rule about not touching the water pot during excretion?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

It is said that one should not hold a water pot with the hand while urinating or defecating.

Nowadays, people don’t follow the practice of holding a water pot while doing these activities. What this actually means is: do not touch the tap or faucet used to fill the water pot during urination or defecation.

How it should be done:

  1. First, fill the water pot.
  2. After urinating or defecating, use the water.

Why this is important:
If you touch the water pot while urinating or defecating, the water is considered impure.

Vyasa Smriti explains:

“Grītvā udakam pāthram yah kuryāt mūtra purīshake tatoyam mūtra tulyamsyāt dvijaha cāndrāyanam caryet.”

This means: if the water pot is touched during urination, the water becomes like urine. Using such water to clean yourself would be incorrect. Moreover, to become pure again after doing so would require additional purification measures.
