Madhwa

When we grew up, whenever we used to receive a news of the death of a relative by Telegram or Phone, we used to take bath. Now-a-days, such news are conveyed in Whatsapp or SMS. How relevant and significant are those Baths we use to take as soon as we received the Bad news?

Pt. Shri Pranesh Achar (Ananda Rangan)

General

If the deceased person is not a very close relative, then there is no need to observe mailige or take a ritual bath.

If the news is about close relatives or very close family members, and the information comes directly and clearly (for example, a personal message or call from their family), then mailige should be observed.

If the news is seen indirectly—such as through WhatsApp status, group messages, or forwards—then there is no compulsion to observe mailige or take a bath.

In short:

Indirect WhatsApp messages or status → No mailige needed

Direct confirmation from close relatives → Mailige should be observed

Not a close relation → No mailige
