In our lifetime what kind of Dhaana one perform that will be counted for Sathgati?

Answered By Pt Sri Pranesh Achar (Ananda Rangan)

General

There are many kinds of Dhana.

  • Annadāna  (Food)  is very important.
  • Even greater than Annadāna is Vidyādāna (Education).
As the scripture says: “Annadānāt param dānam, Vidyādānam ataḥ param” — the gift of knowledge is superior to the gift of food.
  • Kanyādāna (giving a daughter in marriage) is also a great and sacred Dhana.
  • Bhūmidāna (land) is considered highly superior. As long as righteous deeds are performed on that land, the donor continues to receive merit.

However, more important than what is donated is to whom it is donated.
A donation must be given to a worthy recipient (satpātra).

If Kanyādāna is done to worthy people, then the righteous actions performed by the daughter, and later by her children, also bring merit to the donors.

In summary, any donation gives merit, but the scriptures emphasize that it should always be given to a worthy recipient to truly lead to sadgati.
