Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Pooja
During daily worship, we perform nirmalya visarjana (removal of the previous day’s flowers and offerings from the deity). A question arises: Should nirmalya visarjana be done before Sandhyavandana, or after completing Sandhyavandana?
Srinivasa Tirtha explains this while commenting on the text Sadachara Smriti. He states:
“Atha sandhyottaraṁ nirmālya visarjanaṁ kuryāt.”
This means that nirmalya visarjana should be performed after completing Sandhyavandana.
He also cites a verse from the Narasimha Purana:
“Yaḥ prātar utthāya vidhāya nityaṁ
nirmālyam īśasya nirākaroti
na tasya duḥkhaṁ na daridratā cha
nākālamṛtyuḥ na cha rogamātram.”
The meaning is:
A person who wakes up early in the morning, performs the daily duties such as Sandhyavandana, and then removes the nirmalya of the Lord will not suffer from sorrow, poverty, untimely death, or diseases.
Therefore, the proper and recommended practice is to first complete Sandhyavandana and then perform nirmalya visarjana.
