What are the prescribed and prohibited times for getting a haircut according to tradition?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

Someone asked about the permissible and prohibited days for getting a haircut. According to the Shastras, Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday are considered prohibited days.

If a haircut is taken on Tuesday, the lifespan decreases by 11 months.

If a haircut is taken on Saturday, the lifespan decreases by 7 months.

Sunday is usually a holiday for many people, so many get a haircut on that day. However, according to the Shastras, if a haircut is taken on Sunday, the lifespan decreases by 1 month.

Therefore, it is advised to avoid getting a haircut on these three days.

The permissible days are:

Wednesday – lifespan increases by 5 months

Monday – lifespan increases by 7 months

Thursday – lifespan increases by 3 months

Friday – lifespan increases by 11 months

Hence, it is considered appropriate to get a haircut on these permissible days according to the traditional guidelines.
