Is it appropriate to wear someone else's slippers and clothes?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

When we are traveling, there is often a fixed time to leave and a sense of urgency. In that rush, what usually happens is that we may quickly wear whichever chappals or clothes we find nearby and leave, even if they belong to someone else.

But the question is: Is it proper to wear someone else’s chappals or clothes? What happens if we do so?

The Shastras prohibit this practice. It is stated that one should never wear another person’s chappals or clothes.

Especially regarding chappals, elders say that if one’s chappals are lost, one should even consider it a good thing. Therefore, we should always wear our own clothes and our own chappals.

If we are in a hurry and cannot find our own items, we should still avoid wearing whatever chappals or clothes are available. If we wear them, the sins and faults associated with those items may attach themselves to us and affect us.

Therefore, according to traditional guidance, one should never wear another person’s chappals or clothes.
