Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
I have seen many people who, in the early morning while brushing their teeth, apply salt on their finger and clean their teeth with it. A question arises: Is it proper to brush the teeth using salt?
According to the traditional teaching, it should be understood in this way. A scriptural statement says:
“Dantadhāvanam aṅgulyā pratyakṣa lavaṇena vā
mṛttikā bhakṣaṇe chaiva tulyaṁ gomāṁsa bhakṣaṇam.”
This means that brushing the teeth with salt using the finger is considered equivalent to eating clay or even comparable to the sin of eating cow’s meat.
Therefore, one should never brush the teeth with salt. If a person cleans the teeth using salt, the same kind of sin that arises from eating cow’s meat is said to arise.
Hence, it should be clearly understood that teeth should never be cleaned using salt.
