Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
The scriptures say we should not.
A pramāṇa says that we should not look at the Sun:
When it is rising (sunrise)
When it is setting (sunset)
When it is reflected in water
During midday (directly overhead)
During eclipse time
So, in general, we should avoid looking at the Sun directly at these times.
If there is a specific reason (like instruction from a learned astrologer or for a ritual), then it is acceptable in that situation.
But:
We should not watch sunrise or sunset just for enjoyment
We should not look at the Sun thinking “it looks beautiful”
👉 Avoid looking directly at the Sun
👉 Do not watch sunrise/sunset just for sightseeing
👉 Follow this as a rule given by shastra
