THONA THONA is another traditional Tanjore Marathi dish, mostly forgotten in recent times. This is yet another delicious dish from the Tanjore Marathi Cuisine. Goes well with Hot Rice.

Ingredients

Ingredients (Servings – 4 People) 
Spinach (Cut) - 2 Cups 
Buttermilk - 2 Cups (little bit Sour) 
Turmeric Powder - ¼ table spoon 
Desiccated Coconut - 2 table spoon 
Salt - As required 
Chana Dal - 1 ½ table spoon 
Toor Dal - ½ table spoon 
Green Chillies - 2 Pcs 
Ginger - 1 small pc (Optional) 
Cumin Seeds - 1 table spoon 
Coriander Seeds - 1 table spoon M
ustard Seeds - ½ table spoon 
Curry Leaves - Few 
Cooking Oil - 1 table spoon 
Asafoetida - A small pinch

Instructions

  • Soak Chana Dal, Toor Dal, Green Chillies, Ginger, Cumin Seeds and Coriander Seeds for ½ hour and set it aside.
  • Cook the Spinach leaves in 2 Cups of water and little salt.  Once it is cooked, mash it and keep it aside.
  • Add Coconut to the soaked ingredients and grind it to a fine paste, in a mixer.
  • Take a Cooking Vessel or Kadai and mix the Paste, Cooked Spinach, Buttermilk, Salt and Turmeric Powder.  Mix it well before putting it in heat.
  • Cook it on low heat till it boils and them remove the vessel from the heat.
  • Heat Oil in a small pan and temper (Tadka) it with Asafoetida, Curry Leaves and Mustard Seeds.
  • Add the Tadka to the dish.

Your Thona Thona is now ready to serve.  Still wondering how we got that name for this Dish.  Will let you know once I find out.
