Udupi (Paschima Prabandha)

Sri Vadirajaru praises Rajatapeethapura, Madhwa Sarovara, Sri Krishna and Anantheshwara in the Udupi section. The treatment is strongly Madhwa in orientation and celebrates Sri Madhvacharya's Krishna worship and the sacredness of Udupi.

Madhvacharya (1238–1317 CE), founder of the Dvaita Vedanta school, established the temple in the 13th century.   Tradition says he rescued a ship near Udupi’s coast. The grateful captain offered him cargo, among which were two lumps of Gopichandana (sacred clay).    Inside one lump, Madhva discovered a beautiful idol of Bala Krishna holding a churning rod, believed to have been worshipped by Rukmini in Dwaraka.   He installed the idol in Udupi, facing west (Pashchima bhimukha), a unique feature among temples.
