Why should we apply water to our eyes after eating food?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

Food / Eating

There is a verse:

“Śaryātiṁ cha Sukanyāṁ cha, Chyavanaṁ cha Indram Aśvinau,
Bhojanānte smaran akṣṇoḥ, aṅguṣṭhāgrāmbu nikṣipet.”

Meaning:

After meals, one should remember:

  • King Sharyati
  • Sukanya (his daughter)
  • Chyavana Rishi (her husband)
  • Indra
  • Ashwini Devatas (divine physicians)

These five are connected to the story where Chyavana Rishi regained his eyesight.

What should be done after eating?

  1. After finishing food, wash hands and feet properly
  2. Perform Achamana (purification)
  3. Then, take a little water on the thumbs
  4. Gently touch or apply it to both eyes
  5. While doing this, remember the above five personalities

What is the benefit?

  • It is said that this practice helps protect the eyes
  • One will not suffer from eye-related problems
  • It supports good eyesight for a long time
  • It also helps in removing doshas (impurities) and sins

Conclusion:

After भोजन (meals), by remembering these divine personalities and touching the eyes with water, one can maintain good eye health and purity.

This is a simple practice that everyone can follow regularly.
