Why should a mandala be drawn while eating and offering neivedya, and what is its significance?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

When we eat, we usually place the food on a square-shaped plate or platform (mandala). We also do this when offering naivedya (food offerings) to the deities.

  • For deities, the mandala should be square-shaped.
  • For ancestor deities (Pitru Devatas), the mandala should be circular.

Why is the mandala important?

The question arises: What happens if we place food without a mandala, either while eating or offering naivedya?

The Kaustubha text explains:

“Yatudaanaḥ pishaachaashcha kruuraashchaiva cha raakshasaah haranty ahavyakavyam cha mandalena vivarjitah.”

This means:

  • If food is offered without a mandala, the essence or energy of the food is stolen by cruel beings, rakshasas, and pishachas (malevolent spirits).
  • When this happens, the deities do not accept the offering.
  • The food loses its nutritional and spiritual benefit for us.

Conclusion:

Whether we are eating or offering naivedya, we must use the mandala. Placing food without a mandala is improper, and the offering will not fulfill its purpose.
