What is the proper way to hold the Japa Mala during chanting?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Japa and Parayana
The text Smrityartha Sagara explains:
“Madhyama anāmikāṅguṣṭhaiḥ japet, na anyaiḥ kadāchana;
Tarjanyā na spruśet mālām, kaniṣṭhena kadāchana.”
Meaning:
- While doing japa, the mala should be held using only:
- Middle finger (Madhyama)
- Ring finger (Anāmika)
- Thumb (Anguṣṭha)
- The mala should not be touched by:
- Index finger (Tarjani)
- Little finger (Kaniṣṭha)
Important point:
- If the mala is touched using the wrong fingers, it is said that the full merit (punya) of japa is not obtained.
Conclusion:
- Always hold the japamala using thumb, middle finger, and ring finger only
- Avoid using the index and little fingers
- Proper method ensures maximum spiritual benefit
