Madhwa

What is the proper way to hold the Japa Mala during chanting?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

Japa and Parayana

The text Smrityartha Sagara explains:

“Madhyama anāmikāṅguṣṭhaiḥ japet, na anyaiḥ kadāchana;
Tarjanyā na spruśet mālām, kaniṣṭhena kadāchana.”

Meaning:

  • While doing japa, the mala should be held using only:
    • Middle finger (Madhyama)
    • Ring finger (Anāmika)
    • Thumb (Anguṣṭha)
  • The mala should not be touched by:
    • Index finger (Tarjani)
    • Little finger (Kaniṣṭha)

Important point:

  • If the mala is touched using the wrong fingers, it is said that the full merit (punya) of japa is not obtained.

Conclusion:

  • Always hold the japamala using thumb, middle finger, and ring finger only
  • Avoid using the index and little fingers
  • Proper method ensures maximum spiritual benefit
