What are the prescribed and prohibited Tithis for getting a haircut according to tradition?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

In the previous episode, we learned about the days of the week that are suitable and unsuitable for getting a haircut. This time, let us try to understand which tithis (lunar days) are permissible and which are prohibited for a haircut.

Generally, Shashti, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Amavasya (new moon), Pournami (full moon), Ashtami, and Chaturdashi are considered unsuitable tithis for getting a haircut. In addition, if a tithi is associated with the Vyatipata yoga, it is also prohibited to get a haircut on that day.

Therefore, before going for a haircut, one should check the Panchanga (almanac) and know the tithi, weekday, and nakshatra. Only when this is done and the haircut is taken on an appropriate day will it be considered āyuṣya-karma (beneficial for longevity) and produce good results.

Along with this, one should also follow the traditions of one’s own Mutt (Matha). According to traditional practice, it is considered good not to get a haircut on the Aradhana days of the saints of one’s Mutt.
