How should the Yajnopavita be worn?

The elders explain this clearly:

• If the sacred thread is worn above the navel, it is said to reduce one’s lifespan.

If it is worn below the navel, it is said:

“Adho nābhe tapaḥ kṣhayaḥ”
Meaning: the merit of one’s penance (tapas) gets reduced or lost.

Conclusion:

• The sacred thread should be worn neither above nor below the navel
• It should be worn exactly at the level of the navel

To ensure this, one may adjust or tie the thread properly so that it stays in the correct position.
