Can the Kartha of the deceased Parent perform the wedding of his Children or Upanayanam of his Son within one year of the demise of the Parent?

Answered By Pt Sri Pranesh Achar (Ananda Rangan)

General

If a person is the kartha, then until the completion of the one-year annual śrāddha (saṁvatsara / varṣābdika) for the departed parent, auspicious ceremonies such as Upanayana and other similar rituals should not be performed.

The reason is that for performing auspicious ceremonies, Nāndī Śrāddha and Nāndī sthārpana are required. During Nāndī Śrāddha, the ancestors are invoked. A departed soul is considered to fully join the Pitṛu-gaṇa only after the completion of all prescribed monthly rites and the one-year śrāddha.

Therefore, until the saṁvatsara (one-year) rites are completed, auspicious ceremonies should not be conducted in the household.
