According to tradition, how many betel leaves (Viledeli) are used in Thambula?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
When offering tāmbūla (betel leaves) to:
- Deities
- Married women (Sumangalis)
- Brahmins
a common question arises:
How many betel leaves should be offered?
The text Tāmbūla Kalpa Sangraha explains:
“Eka parṇam, dvi parṇam vā, tri parṇam na kadāchana;
ripūṇām api dātavyam, ṣaṭ parṇam tu prayatnataḥ.”
Meaning:
- One should not offer 1, 2, or 3 leaves
- Even to an enemy, such numbers should not be given
- One should try to offer 6 leaves (best option)
What should we understand?
- If even enemies should not be given 1, 2, or 3 leaves,
then we should definitely not offer such numbers to:- Deities
- Brahmins
- Sumangalis
Conclusion:
- ❌ Do not offer 1, 2, or 3 leaves
- ✅ Minimum: 4 leaves
- ⭐ Best: 6 leaves or more
So, while offering tāmbūla, always use 4 or more leaves, and 6 leaves is considered ideal.
