According to scriptures, how should one perform Dāna?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Dhaanam
In many situations, we perform dāna (charity) by inviting Brahmins to our homes. But a question arises:
- Is it better to invite them home and give, or
- To go to their place and give?
The Parāśara Smriti gives a clear answer:
“Abhigamya uttamam dānam, āhūya tu madhyamam”
Meaning:
- Going to the Brahmin’s place and giving donation → Best (Uttama Dāna)
- Inviting them to our home and giving → Medium (Madhyama Dāna)
It further says:
“Adhamam yāchamānāya”
- If we give only when someone asks for donation, it is inferior (Adhama Dāna)
And:
“Sevā dānam tu niṣphalam”
- If we give donation in return for a favor received, it is not real charity
- It becomes mere service, and gives no spiritual benefit (Niṣphala)
Conclusion:
- Best: Go personally and give donation
- Next: Invite and give at home
- Lower: Give when asked
- No benefit: Giving in return for favors
To receive the highest merit (punya), one should go to the Brahmin’s place and offer dāna with humility.
