Yama Dwitiya, also known as Bhai Dooj, is festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It is the final day of Diwali celebrations and is observed in South India, Maharashtra, and Telangana. In North India, it is known as Bhai Dooj.
When it is celebrated: Yama Dwitiya is celebrated on the second day of the waxing phase of the moon in the Kartik month.
What it commemorates: This festival marks the reunion of Yama, the God of Death, with his sister Yamuna, the sacred river.
What happens: During the festival, sisters perform a ritual called aarti for their brothers' well-being. In return, brothers offer gifts and blessings to their sisters.
