Vijaya Dashami is an auspicious day for starting educational activities and other important tasks for both children and adults
Vijaya Dashami, also known as Dasara or Navaratri, is celebrated across India on Ashwayuja Shudda Dashami. It is also referred to as Madhwa Jayanthi, marking the day when Vayudevaru incarnated as Sri Madhwacharyaru to challenge various philosophical views as instructed by Sri Hari.
This is one of the auspicious day, muhurthas wherein one need not look at stars, graha, etc,, for starting or doing any shubha kaarya. On this day taaraanukoolya need not be seen for fixing the muhurtha.
Triumph of Sri Ramachandra: On this day, Sri Ramachandra defeated Ravana and rescued Sita. To commemorate this, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghanada are burned in many parts of the country.
Victory of Goddess Durga: Goddess Durga, known as Chamundeswari or Mahishasuramardhini, killed the buffalo demon Mahishasura after a nine-day battle.
End of Pandavas' Exile: The Pandavas ended their Agnatavasa (hidden exile) on this day. Arjuna, disguised as Bruhannala, retrieved his weapons from the Shamee tree and won a battle against the Kauravas.
Mysore Dasara Procession: Mysore celebrates Dasara with a grand procession featuring the Chamundeswari idol on an elaborately decorated elephant, with festivities stretching from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantap.
Shamee Pooja: The Shamee tree, revered for its role in holding the Pandavas’ weapons during their exile, is worshipped on Vijaya Dashami. Shamee leaves are exchanged as a symbol of prosperity and to commemorate a story involving the sage Kautsa, who received gold coins from the Shamee tree to pay his Guru Dakshina.
