Shri Kashi Math was established around 1540 AD by Shri Vijayindra Teertharu of Shri Rayara Math (then called Vibhudendra Math) during his Chaturmasya at Cochin, upon the request of the Kochi Gowda Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community. He initiated a vatu from the GSB community into sanyasa and established a matha at Kashi. Since then, the tradition continues with only brahmacharis being initiated into the peetha. The current pontiff is Shri Samyamindra Teertharu.
Once, Shri Varadendra Teertharu prophesied that a young boy named Ramakrishna Puranik (son of Sri Narasimha Puranik) would become a great yati. This came true as Ramakrishna later became Shri Indirakanta Teertharu, the peethadhipati of Gokarna Partagali Jeevottama Math.
Shri Varadendra Teertharu was a master of music and rhythm (naada-jnana) along with deep Vedic knowledge (veda-jnana).
Expert in playing the Veena and many other instruments
Known for correcting great musicians in laya/tala
Created new ragas and taught complex svara patterns (svara prasthara)
Sadly, many of his musical contributions have been lost over time.
