Maagha Snana is the holy bath taken early in the morning during the Maagha month. It is considered highly sacred and removes even the gravest sins. Scriptures say it grants punya (merit) equal to performing great yagnas and other severe penances.
Maagha Snana begins from the Pushya Purnima (Full Moon in Pushya month) and continues till Maagha Purnima (Full Moon in Maagha month).
The last three days of Maagha month are called "Antya Pushkarini" and are especially auspicious.
Taking a dip during Maagha Snana helps in:
Washing away severe sins like harming a Brahmin, cow, parents, or guru.
Removing sins of stealing, lying, and immoral acts.
Gaining health, peace, and prosperity.
Attaining liberation (Moksha) by pleasing Lord Vishnu.
Wake up early before sunrise, when stars are still visible.
Go to a holy river or water body.
Do Sankalpa with devotion:
"Maagha snaanam karishyaami makarasthe divaakare |
Aasamaapthi mahaadeva nirvighnam kuru maadhava ||"
Take a dip and offer Arghya to the Lord:
To Lord Vishnu:
"Nama: kamalanaabhaaya namaste jalashaayine |
Namastestu hrushikesha gruhaanaargyam namostute ||"
To Surya Deva:
"Savitre prasavitre cha parandhaama jale mama |
Tvattejasaa paribhrashtam paapam yaatu sahasradhaa ||"
🙏 Note: If unable to bathe all days, at least try to take a holy bath during the last three days of Maagha month.
