Bruhad Gowri Vrata is a special vrata (vow or ritual observance) dedicated to Goddess Parvati (Gowri Devi). The word "Bruhad" means "great" or "elaborate", so this is considered a detailed and important form of Gowri worship.
This vrata is observed to please Goddess Gowri, who represents divine feminine power, purity, and marital happiness.
Devotees, especially married women, observe it for the well-being of their family, prosperity, peace, and long life of their husbands.
Unmarried girls also perform it seeking a good and virtuous life partner.
Bruhad Gowri Vrata is usually observed in the Bhadrapada month, around or before Ganesh Chaturthi, depending on regional calendars.
It is part of the Gowri-Ganesha festivities, especially celebrated in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
A Gowri idol (either clay or silver) is decorated and worshipped at home.
Devotees observe fasting, offer haldi-kumkum, flowers, fruits, and traditional dishes.
Special mantras and Gowri Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names) are chanted.
At the end of the vrata, Sumangalis (married women) are invited and gifted with bangles, kumkum, turmeric, and saree (optional).
It’s followed by Ganesha Chaturthi, where Lord Ganesha is welcomed.
