Banashankari Kula Dharma is the Janmotsava of the Devi. She is also called as Shakambari. Banashankari is an incarnation of Parvati.
The skanda purana states that when there was severe famine for hundreds of years, the demigods prayed Lord Shiva and did penance to please him. As per Lord Shiva’s advice they all prayed Banashankari Devi to bless them. Pleased with the prayers, Banashankari Devi eradicated famine by blessing good rain. She also filled the earth with food articles.
It is widely believed that Banashankari killed the demon Durgamasura at Badami near Bagalkot district. There is a temple there now.
