Balipratipada (also known as Bali-Padyami, Padva, Virapratipada, or Dyutapratipada) is the fourth day of Diwali, honoring the return of King Bali to earth. It falls in October or November and marks the first day of the Hindu month of Kartika. In regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan, it is celebrated as the New Year (Bestu Varas).
The festival dates back to ancient times and is mentioned in texts like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and various Puranas. It commemorates the victory of Vishnu's dwarf avatar, Vamana, over Bali. As a devotee of Vishnu, Bali was granted a boon to return to earth once a year.
Celebrations include decorating floors with colorful images of Bali, holding community feasts, offering rice and food to ancestors, decorating cattle, gambling, and creating icons of Vishnu's avatars.
