Ingredients

2 cups Green Beans (trimmed and chopped)

2 tsp Oil (preferably coconut or vegetable oil)

½ tsp Mustard Seeds

1 tsp Urad Dal (split black gram)

2 Broken Red Chilies (adjust for spice level)

Salt to taste

½ cup Fresh Grated Coconut (for garnish)

1 tsp Sugar (optional, for sweetness)

Instructions

Method:

Preparing the Beans:

  • Boil the chopped green beans in salted water until tender but still crisp. Drain and set aside.

Tempering:

  • In a large frying pan or kadai, heat 2 tsp of oil over medium heat.
  • Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Once the mustard seeds start popping, add urad dal and broken red chilies. Sauté until the urad dal turns golden brown.

Combining Ingredients:

  • Add the boiled green beans to the pan and mix well.
  • Season with salt to taste. If you prefer a hint of sweetness, add 1 tsp of sugar at this stage.
  • Stir everything together, allowing the beans to absorb the flavors for a few minutes.

Garnishing:

  • Turn off the heat and garnish with fresh grated coconut, mixing it in gently.

Serving:

  • Serve the Beans Palya warm as a side dish with rice, roti, or as part of a larger South Indian meal.

Additional Tips:

  • Bean Variations: You can use other beans like French beans, or a mix of different types for added texture.
  • Spice Adjustments: For extra heat, consider adding a pinch of red chili powder or chopped green chilies.
  • Vegetable Add-ins: You can also include other vegetables like grated carrot or finely chopped onions for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Coconut Substitute: If fresh coconut is not available, you can use desiccated coconut, but the flavor will be different.

This Beans Palya is a simple, nutritious dish that’s full of flavor and perfect for any meal! Enjoy!
