Once Shri Ramachandra Teertharu (Shishya of Shri Jagathbhushana Teertharu) of Shri Palimaru Math, went on a Pilgrimage to Badrinath. He fell seriously ill and decided to initiate someone from within in entourage to take over the reins of the Matha and save the lineage from breaking, just in case he attains lotus feet. Hence, he chose one of his disciple, an eligible Saraswat Brahmachari and initiated him as Shri Narayana Teertharu as this incident took place in Badrinath where Lord Badrinarayana is on meditation. He also instructed the newly initiated Junior Swamiji to complete the Pilgrimage which he had planned.
Shri Narayana Teertharu went ahead with the Pilgrimage plan and visited many historic and religious places, all the while doing tapas as well as preaching the Tatvavada Philosophy. Shri Narayana Teertharu also established a new Building for the Math in Kashi, a gift from the King of Kashi.
In the meantime, Shri Ramachandra Teertharu gradually recovered and reached Udupi. When Shri Narayana Teertharu returned to Udupi he was pleasantly surprised and happy to see his Guru. The Dravid Brahmins Bhakts of the Matha requested Shri Ramachandra Teertharu to revoke the authority bestowed on Shri Narayana Teertharu and instead select a new pontiff to be his successor.
Though, Shri Ramachandra Teertharu initiated another of disciple Shri Vidyanidhi Teertharu to be his successor of Shri Palimar Math, he established a new Math and made Shri Narayana Teertharu as its first pontiff. He advised him to bring together the Saraswat Brahmin Community and enlighten them with the Tatvavada Philosophy and Shriman Madhwcharyaru’s teachings.
Shri Narayana Teertharu came to Bhatkal in Canara District, established a Math there and began spreading faith among the Saraswat Community. This was the beginning of the Gokarna Math. Subsequently, the Math became popular as Jeevottam Math when Shri Jeevottama Teertharu became the Pontiff of the Math.
