Shri Palimaru Math is one of the 8 (Ashta) Mathas established by Sriman Madhwacharya to perform the Pooja to Lord Krishna in Shri Krishna Temple in Udupi.
Shri Madhwacharya selected eight of his disciples to perform Pooja in Shri Krishna Temple in Udupi and to spread his Dwaita Philosphy. These eight disciples were from eight different villages around the Udupi District. Each of these Saints established Math in their respective Villages. Thus, began journey of the Asha Mathas in the service of the Lord.
The Poojas in Shri Krishna Temple in Udupi is performed only by Saints (Yatis). Shri Madhwacharya devised a system where each of the Ashta Mathas shall be given an opportunity to perform all the Poojas in the Temple for two consecutive months. In this system, once a Math completes its 2-month period, it would get back the opportunity again after 14 months, when all the remaining Maths complete their 2-month period. This system was revised to 2 years by Shri Vadiraja Teertharu.
Shri Hrishikesha Teertharu was the first to be initiated into Sainthood by Shri Madhwacharya. He hailed from the Palimaru Village in the Udupi District. Shri Madhwacharya gave him the idols of Lord Kodandapani (Shri Ramachandra), Goddess Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman for worship. Shri Hrishikesha Teertharu has scripted many Sarvamoola Granthas of Shri Madhwacharya. Many of the Original Manuscripts are still preserved by Shri Palimaru Math.
Sri Hrishikesha Teertharu established a Math in Palimaru and it was referred as Palimaru Matha. Since then, the Ashta Mathas were referred by the place where they were established. The Matha of Shri Hrishikesha Teertha Peeta and its lineage is called as the Palimaru Matha.
