The Krishnapur Matha is a Madhwa Vaishnava monastery. It is one of the Ashta Mathas founded by the great Dvaita philosopher Shri Madhvacharya in Udupi. The first pontiff of this monastery was Janardhana Thirtha, one of the direct disciples of Shri Madhvacharya, and presiding deity of this matha is Kalingamardhana Krishna. The matha houses a Mukyaprana temple inside where puja is performed every day. Since 1971, Sri Vidya Saagara Theertha is the presiding pontiff of this Matha.
This monastic order has many branches in and around Udupi (Ramanakatte, Padigaru, Dandithirtha, Padubidri) and others in the district of Dakshina Kannada (Pejavara, Krishnapura) in Karnataka state and one more branch is in Prayaga (Allahabad).
The Krishnapura Matha had last large tracts of land under its ownership but a large portion of it was lost due to the enactment of Land Reforms in 1974.
The Matha at Krishnapura, which is 3 kilometres from Surathkal near Mangalore, is the main Matha from which the name Krishnapura Matha is derived. The present Matha at Krishnapura was built by Sri Vidyamurthi Theertha the twenty-sixth Swamiji in this lineage. There is a Mukhyprana (Hanuman) temple inside the Matha.. The structure of this temple is mostly wooden.
